Shoes galore

Standard

Haha, yeah… so my latest shopittome.com salemail email is full of shoes – I mean racks full of them. Thanks to Onlineshoes.com and Piperlime.com, I have a plethora of shoes to choose from. And yes, I said plethora. Reminds me of that bit on The Three Amigos…

So check this out. I’ll share what shoes to wear on different styles and outfits, in different settings, based on the salemail email.

  • Adidas Gazelle in Black, paired with dark or semi-dark jeans (baggy or bootcut, depends on preferences, situations, and where you’re going that night), light-colored hoodie or funky stripe/pattern button down, Von Dutch trucker hat (HA!) and Reaction watch. Adidas Gazelle shoes are $54.99 at onlineshoes.com
  • Rockport Colrain in Black, paired with dark bootcut jeans or flat-front khakis, plain white button down shirt and chrome buckle belt courtesy of Armani Exchange. Add aviators, Kenneth Cole watch, and fancy rings at your leisure. Rockport Colrain shoes are $46.99 at onlineshoes.com
  • Adidas O-Type Driving with dark denim (either non-destroyed, or semi-destroyed), and with added patterns to suit your style. Pair with a funky tee from Armani and glasses from Steve Madden and your set for a very casual look. $69.99 at onlineshoes.com
  • Kenneth Cole Biggest Fan paired with dark bootcut denim jeans, chrome studded belt, colored pattern shirt (with at least white as the base color), and a Movado watch will get you noticed, and that’s being real. Kenneth Cole shoes courtesy of onlineshoes.com for $97.98.
  • Guess Donte with either white or khaki linen pants, or even (take a guess) a dark denim jeans with a solid (or striped, depending on your flavor) pique polo from Ralph Lauren, Nautica, or Express for a more comfortable, stylish, and fashionable look that says something nice about you and not calling you a slob. Guess footwear from piperlime.com at $54.97
  • Sketchers Footloose paired with denim jeans (either dark, distressed, or combinations), mixed with a white button down shirt with light horizontal or cross-pattern shirt, folded sleeves, and a nice dragon buckle belt from Buckle. Piperlime presents Sketchers Footloose shoes for $51.99.
  • Kenneth Cole New York Clean Slate boots (my fave) paired with a dark denim bootcut jeans followed with black pinstripe button down shirt from Armani Exchange, Macy’s, Nordstroms, or Express (or wherever you can find one), sleek black leather belt, black classic Movado watch, and, if you can afford it, diamond earrings for your pierced ears. :):) Kenneth Cole New York Clean Slate boots from piperlime.com are $91.97.

There you go… That should give you some ideas on how to wear different types of shoes for your day.  Be creative, and always be yourself.  Have fun shopping!

Also, Prada (yes Prada) has a great shoe on sale right now on  Bluefly.com.  I’ve seen something similar in LA and have tried them on, and they’re quite fantastic, IMHO.  While it is a whopping $450, it is 80% off the retail price (down from $2315!!!).  That must be one lovely shoe!!

A Must-Have Look

Standard

Looking good is just as much an attitude and mental perception than it is your outfit and how you wear it.  But it doesn’t hurt to have a great outfit that makes you feel good and helps your mind feel good about what you wear.  Having the perfect combination of cut, texture, tailoring, color, and style will always hit the mark in giving a person that wonderful sensation.  The outfit I’ve shown below is a great example of how to get that sensation.

Express Curdoroy Suit

Express Curdoroy Suit

This corduroy suit from Express.com is a perfect blend of sophisticated and classic look with a modern flair. The 5-button vest playfully shown underneath the 2-button corduroy jacket provides that classic 3-piece-suit-look without straying too far away from the more contemporary design. The buckle belt gives this outfit a subtle hint of modern wear without being overtly modern, which makes this whole design more versatile than one would think.

Next, add a solid or lightly striped 1MX shirt to make the jacket and vest pop out.  Look for strong and light hues of white, purple, blue, or red to enhance the look that you are trying to achieve.  Stripe patterns are also great with the look if the occasion calls for it.  Since this is corduroy fabric, depending on the wale patterns and size, offset large patterns with more subtle tones, widths, and lengths to balance the design.  And if you’re bold enough, you can even add a bold black button-down shirt with wide pinstripe patterns in lighter gray, purple, red, or off-white colors to get that modern-ish craving.

Add a flat-front corduroy Producer Pant to round out the outfit.  If you are looking into getting pleated corduroy pants, make sure to check the wale patterns of the corduroy and see how the strong the pleated lines are.  You want to ensure that the wale patterns are not obtrusive enough that it distorts the pleated lines, which will screw up the pant’s role of slendering your body.

Of course, I can’t finish this without my friends from Shopittome.com, who have supplied me with sweet deals on shoes. As always, I’m going to look for quality, stitch, style, and comfort when picking shoes. There are going to be some brands that people tend to love and others tend to hate. Pick the brand that you know that is going to last you a long time, that will look good as it grows on you, and that it will be as versatile to your wardrobe. With this in mind, I’ve always trusted Kenneth Cole to get the job done, and here’s how I am taking care of business.

Kenneth Cole Sim-Plicity Moc-Toe Oxfords

Kenneth Cole Sim-Plicity Moc-Toe Oxfords

A great shoe to match this outfit would be something that 1) is not too pointed, 2) that is slightly arched on the front, but not too much that it looks like a flat-toe, 3) slip-on or laces, and 4) has a strong sole foundation on both the heel and the side. Kenneth Cole has never disappointed, and its Sim-Plicity shoe is an excellent choice to polish this outfit.

Other add-ons include square-shaped cuff-links from Banana Republic or Kenneth Cole, striped or solid pattern ties in various hues and colors similar to the 1MX shirt, and last but not least, sheer confidence.

Lots of it.

Kenneth Cole Worlds Finest Ornament Slip-On Shoe

Standard

I have to hand it to my man, Kenneth Cole.  I absolutely love his shoes.  Very modern, sleek, stylish, comfortable, and best of all, they fit well with any outfit.  Thanks to Shopittome.com, I received a Sale Mail that pointed me to the latest sales on the brands that I love.  Check out this tight KC shoe on sale at Macy’s.

Ok, how can you not go wrong with this? This is not your dad’s slip-on or your grandfather’s. It’s sleek, modern, and so in style. When you’re looking for any clothing piece, the general guidelines are that you want something that will be versatile, and Kenneth Cole pulls it off well.  Want to look polished?  This bad boy can go business as usual in the daytime and is an excellent addition to the water cooler Olympic discussions.  Pair this up with some dark Diesel jeans, crisp button-down collar shirt, and a black Banana Republic Pinstripe 3-button blazer, and this baby will turn heads in a swanky bar at night before you can order your scotch on the rocks.  As my man Mikey put it, “single malt, as long as it’s not a blend…”

The Rat Pack will be so proud of you.

A great outfit (or a new look)

Express.com has some decent sales going on this time of year, and I’m going to show you an outfit that would look great for this coming fall.

Express.com’s 1MX Shirts

Express 1MX Solid Shirt

Express 1MX Solid Shirt

Express 1MX Summerall Stripe Shirt

Express 1MX Summerall Stripe Shirt

Here are two shirts that look great and are definitely versatile for your wardrobe.  Cotton/Spandex material that is a modern fit for all body types with pointed collars, single lined button barrel cuffs, rounded shirttail, and is machine washable for normal wear and tear.  This modern style is contemporary enough for a classic look. Notice the pant selections for each shirt.  The solid white 1MX shirt can be combined with both the gray or black pants for the office, or wear it on the weeknights with a pair of nice, dark flat-front denim jeans. The dark striped-shirt can be worn with solid black, off-black, or pinstripe pants for the office, and worn with dark denim jeans on the weekends.

Express.com’s Producer Pants

Express Cotton Producer Pant - Solid

Express Cotton Producer Pant - Solid

With the two styles of shirts mentioned above, the next step is to find great pants to match. This solid cotton Producer Pant by Express is a complimentary pant to the shirts. Flat-front pants are great for average heights and slim builds, while pleated pants will accentuate heights of the “vertically-challenged” folks.  This is Express’ signature pant line, and the comfort value is great.  I highly recommend it.

Price: $49.50
Colors: Black, Caravan, Marsh

Shoes and Accessories

What really makes or breaks the outfit are the complimentary accessories that you combine with your attire. How you “accessorize” your outfit is by looking at the patterns, colors, and shapes of your wardrobe, and letting your accessories offset and accentuate what is lacking with your outfit.

Express Sleek Buckle Belt

Express Sleek Buckle Belt

For example, the outfit I chose above is very modern, sleek, crisp, and clean. So to match the accessories with the outfit, I chose a sleek buckle belt that is formal enough for a work outfit, yet stylish and casual for denim attire.

Kenneth Cole Reaction Guyding Light

Kenneth Cole Reaction Guyding Light

Next, I chose a selection of black shoes that will accentuate the look I’m trying to create. Most designer slip-ons (not necessarily penny loafers) have that modern look, so I am going with my trusty Kenneth Cole shoes to enhance the style of the outfit. Choose between a square-toe or pointed-toe shape, but for this outfit, I would stay away from cap-toe shoes, as it doesn’t match the overall look.

Adding a buckle on the shoe will definitely compliment the belt and make the outfit a more polished, modern look. Finally, adding black or silver cufflinks from Kenneth Cole and Reaction and watches from Giorgio Armani and Kenneth Cole will round out the entire wardrobe for you.

Croc Pot

Standard

I’ve been getting a few emails and IMs from my friends who think Crocs are fugly, and are even sending me URLs of those that do.  So I’m thinking, “Hmm… this can be good!”

I’m going to collect them and put the links on my site for those that want it.  This will be good!!!

Great… Another shoe article.

Standard

Well, what do you expect?  From my previous blog about Crocs, I felt compelled to write another article about other what-not-to-wear shoes for men.  In any outfit, accessories such as shoes and watches can make or break a man’s look (or even a woman’s, but that’s another article).  This time, I’m going to rank on Tevas and Birkenstocks.

Now settle down, people.  I know what you’re thinking, and before you say anything, let me be the first to say it.  Unless you’re a tree hugger, a vegan environmentalist, a non-conformist, an outdoors-kind of guy, a software developer from Seattle, a broke college student, or really not fashion-oriented, you shouldn’t be wearing them.  And here are reasons why:

  1. FUGLY

They really do look fugly.  I mean seriously, folks.  This is 2008!!!  There are many shoes to choose from, and I don’t care how you “think” these are comfortable, there are more shoes out there that fit better and look better.  The typical outfit that involves these shoes are a) cargo shorts with a tee or button down short sleeves, and if you’re a software developer, add in some wool socks to “match;” or b) jeans, tee and/or casual button down (short and long sleeve), and if you’re in college or just got out of college, include your alma mater hat.  And you expect people to respect you, let alone date you???

  2. CHEAP

While I know they range in prices that can be “expensive” to some, the fact that they look cheap says enough.

  3. OUTDATED

As stated in my first point, this is 2008, not 1993.  I wore Birks back when I was in junior high back in the 1990s, and believe me it was popular then – with everyone.  And now similar shoemakers are using the same formula to make different variations of these two shoes…  Um, hello?  Fashion faux pas!?!?

  4. LACK OF CLASS/STYLE

You are what you wear.  Like I said before, if you were any of those kinds of people listed above, I don’t think you will qualify in this case.  BUT, if you’re not, then really you should be looking elsewhere for different styles of shoes.  If you were working for a company – let’s say a marketing firm – and you wore Tevas or Birks every single day, you may feel “comfortable” in them, but you certainly won’t look put together in them.  They don’t match, and they don’t “go.”  They actually need to go away.

I’m sure I can find more reasons, but you get the drift.  There are a plethora of choices out there to dress comfortably and dress in a fashionable way without looking like a dork.  Gentlemen, you can be comfortable AND look great at the same time!  But you need to be more aware of what really goes with your outfit and wardrobe than just tossing a bunch of clothes together to make your day.  If you have to, ask your female friends to help you out in that department.  I’m sure they would love to help, and I know that even the simplest of help will bring much fruit later on in life.

Crocs: What a load of…

Standard

Okay folks, I’m going to get down to the dirty dirty here.  One of the most recent fashion faux pas that I have continually seen is the amount of people wearing (and selling) Crocs.  One look at that thing and one would think that Crocs are, well, a load of crock.  Seriously.  I was at a local upscale mall this past week and stopped by RESTORATION HARDWARE and POTTERY BARN to check out the sales.  I noticed that a couple of sales associates who had cool outfits wore Crocs that “matched” their outfit.  I didn’t want to be rude, but in my mind I was crying in tears out of laughter as I walked by them.  I can understand that if you’re late for work, you’ll just take whatever shoe you find that is remotely in the same color of your outfit.  Fine.  We’ve all been there before, so it’s not a big deal.  But honestly, are Crocs THAT good enough to wear with anything?  Is it a shoe-for-all-outfit type?  Is it THAT comfortable than say, Hush Puppies?  Is it THAT sophisticated enough to wear for a “classier” retail establishment?  Hmmm….

So I did my own research a couple of months ago and, sad to say, tried out a few Crocs in a Hallmark store (yes they sell them at Hallmark!!) at an outlet mall in town to see what the fuss was all about.  Of course, they came out with any and every color and shade of the rainbow, including the almighty camo.  While I could see how one would think it was OK to get, it wasn’t at all attractive in any outfit (especially mine) nor comfortable after walking for a “long period” of time.  (My long period of time was walking in and out of the card aisles for a few minutes).  After my trial period ended, I found myself people watching in the mall, and to my surprise (OK, I wasn’t THAT surprised), I saw more guys wearing them, and guess what is the predominant color for them?  You got it.  Camo.

Now granted, budgets can also be a part of the reason why people buy this crap.  I would refute that argument and say that there are better choices for every budget that would actually make you LOOK better in the long term, and make you feel a bit more sophisticated than wearing Crocs.  For example, I bought a pair of black leather sandals from BANANA REPUBLIC Outlet for $15, and I love it.  It’s casual enough in look to wear with jeans and tee, button down shirt, or any combination, and “casual-formal” enough to wear a nice pair of herringbone slacks with a freshly pressed button down shirt.

And in the end, I don’t look like a load of crock wearing it.
