Banana Republic

My Brand of the Week of 8.24.09 belongs to Banana Republic, whom I have had a great “relationship” since 1999.

If I can say one thing I love about Banana Republic, it’s their classic blend of style.  A healthy mix of contemporary feel with modern sensibilities, “BR” has a great way of appealing to various body types.  I love their choice of color palettes, the texture and style of their clothing, and the feeling of comfort and ease that I get when I wear their clothes.  A very good brand that has much to offer in terms of mixing and matching attire to perfect that day-to-day look.

Rock on with your bad self, BR.

Been a long time…

4 11 2008

It’s been a while since I last posted a blog… Too busy with everything going on right now, but I promise I will try to post more soon.  In the meantime, here are some things I have been pondering lately about fashion:

1)  Good fashion sense is only good enough to last a while.  Great fashion sense will last a lifetime, and will keep you from making bad decisions.

2)  Fashionistas didn’t start out by being fashionistas.  There is always a cause and effect, a source to the result.  As a master influences their student, so does the fashion influence the person.

3)  When you view your wardrobe, you don’t let it rule you.  Fashion and wardrobe shouldn’t be about how people view you, or how you let other people view you.  It’s about how you view yourself and how that perception creates an image of you – especially in terms of how it makes you feel and look when you wear them.

4)  Fat or thin, short or tall, never, ever think that you are worse or not good enough to wear things that you see models or mannequins wear.  They are made to wear things for a reason; as for mannequins, they mostly have pins in the back to make the clothes they model look fitted.  There are many ways to manipulate colors, texture, sizes and such to fit any body type.  Don’t get caught up with what GQ or Vogue tells you.  Just look for the fashion elements that will make YOU as a person (for who you are) look good.

A Must-Have Look

5 09 2008

Looking good is just as much an attitude and mental perception than it is your outfit and how you wear it.  But it doesn’t hurt to have a great outfit that makes you feel good and helps your mind feel good about what you wear.  Having the perfect combination of cut, texture, tailoring, color, and style will always hit the mark in giving a person that wonderful sensation.  The outfit I’ve shown below is a great example of how to get that sensation.

Express Curdoroy Suit

Express Curdoroy Suit

This corduroy suit from Express.com is a perfect blend of sophisticated and classic look with a modern flair. The 5-button vest playfully shown underneath the 2-button corduroy jacket provides that classic 3-piece-suit-look without straying too far away from the more contemporary design. The buckle belt gives this outfit a subtle hint of modern wear without being overtly modern, which makes this whole design more versatile than one would think.

Next, add a solid or lightly striped 1MX shirt to make the jacket and vest pop out.  Look for strong and light hues of white, purple, blue, or red to enhance the look that you are trying to achieve.  Stripe patterns are also great with the look if the occasion calls for it.  Since this is corduroy fabric, depending on the wale patterns and size, offset large patterns with more subtle tones, widths, and lengths to balance the design.  And if you’re bold enough, you can even add a bold black button-down shirt with wide pinstripe patterns in lighter gray, purple, red, or off-white colors to get that modern-ish craving.

Add a flat-front corduroy Producer Pant to round out the outfit.  If you are looking into getting pleated corduroy pants, make sure to check the wale patterns of the corduroy and see how the strong the pleated lines are.  You want to ensure that the wale patterns are not obtrusive enough that it distorts the pleated lines, which will screw up the pant’s role of slendering your body.

Of course, I can’t finish this without my friends from Shopittome.com, who have supplied me with sweet deals on shoes. As always, I’m going to look for quality, stitch, style, and comfort when picking shoes. There are going to be some brands that people tend to love and others tend to hate. Pick the brand that you know that is going to last you a long time, that will look good as it grows on you, and that it will be as versatile to your wardrobe. With this in mind, I’ve always trusted Kenneth Cole to get the job done, and here’s how I am taking care of business.

Kenneth Cole Sim-Plicity Moc-Toe Oxfords

Kenneth Cole Sim-Plicity Moc-Toe Oxfords

A great shoe to match this outfit would be something that 1) is not too pointed, 2) that is slightly arched on the front, but not too much that it looks like a flat-toe, 3) slip-on or laces, and 4) has a strong sole foundation on both the heel and the side. Kenneth Cole has never disappointed, and its Sim-Plicity shoe is an excellent choice to polish this outfit.

Other add-ons include square-shaped cuff-links from Banana Republic or Kenneth Cole, striped or solid pattern ties in various hues and colors similar to the 1MX shirt, and last but not least, sheer confidence.

Lots of it.

Kenneth Cole Worlds Finest Ornament Slip-On Shoe

23 08 2008

I have to hand it to my man, Kenneth Cole.  I absolutely love his shoes.  Very modern, sleek, stylish, comfortable, and best of all, they fit well with any outfit.  Thanks to Shopittome.com, I received a Sale Mail that pointed me to the latest sales on the brands that I love.  Check out this tight KC shoe on sale at Macy’s.

Ok, how can you not go wrong with this? This is not your dad’s slip-on or your grandfather’s. It’s sleek, modern, and so in style. When you’re looking for any clothing piece, the general guidelines are that you want something that will be versatile, and Kenneth Cole pulls it off well.  Want to look polished?  This bad boy can go business as usual in the daytime and is an excellent addition to the water cooler Olympic discussions.  Pair this up with some dark Diesel jeans, crisp button-down collar shirt, and a black Banana Republic Pinstripe 3-button blazer, and this baby will turn heads in a swanky bar at night before you can order your scotch on the rocks.  As my man Mikey put it, “single malt, as long as it’s not a blend…”

The Rat Pack will be so proud of you.

A great outfit (or a new look)

19 08 2008

Express.com has some decent sales going on this time of year, and I’m going to show you an outfit that would look great for this coming fall.

Express.com’s 1MX Shirts

Express 1MX Solid Shirt

Express 1MX Solid Shirt

Express 1MX Summerall Stripe Shirt

Express 1MX Summerall Stripe Shirt

Here are two shirts that look great and are definitely versatile for your wardrobe.  Cotton/Spandex material that is a modern fit for all body types with pointed collars, single lined button barrel cuffs, rounded shirttail, and is machine washable for normal wear and tear.  This modern style is contemporary enough for a classic look. Notice the pant selections for each shirt.  The solid white 1MX shirt can be combined with both the gray or black pants for the office, or wear it on the weeknights with a pair of nice, dark flat-front denim jeans. The dark striped-shirt can be worn with solid black, off-black, or pinstripe pants for the office, and worn with dark denim jeans on the weekends.

Express.com’s Producer Pants

Express Cotton Producer Pant - Solid

With the two styles of shirts mentioned above, the next step is to find great pants to match. This solid cotton Producer Pant by Express is a complimentary pant to the shirts. Flat-front pants are great for average heights and slim builds, while pleated pants will accentuate heights of the “vertically-challenged” folks.  This is Express’ signature pant line, and the comfort value is great.  I highly recommend it.

Price: $49.50
Colors: Black, Caravan, Marsh

Shoes and Accessories

What really makes or breaks the outfit are the complimentary accessories that you combine with your attire. How you “accessorize” your outfit is by looking at the patterns, colors, and shapes of your wardrobe, and letting your accessories offset and accentuate what is lacking with your outfit.

Express Sleek Buckle Belt

Express Sleek Buckle Belt

For example, the outfit I chose above is very modern, sleek, crisp, and clean. So to match the accessories with the outfit, I chose a sleek buckle belt that is formal enough for a work outfit, yet stylish and casual for denim attire.

Kenneth Cole Reaction Guyding Light

Next, I chose a selection of black shoes that will accentuate the look I’m trying to create. Most designer slip-ons (not necessarily penny loafers) have that modern look, so I am going with my trusty Kenneth Cole shoes to enhance the style of the outfit. Choose between a square-toe or pointed-toe shape, but for this outfit, I would stay away from cap-toe shoes, as it doesn’t match the overall look.

Adding a buckle on the shoe will definitely compliment the belt and make the outfit a more polished, modern look. Finally, adding black or silver cufflinks from Kenneth Cole and Reaction and watches from Giorgio Armani and Kenneth Cole will round out the entire wardrobe for you.

Another virtual dressing room

Armani Exchange Designer clothing

Armani Exchange Designer clothing

ARMANI EXCHANGE is one of my favorite web sites when it comes to clothing. Armani Exchange features a virtual dressing room style that lets one mix and match tops and bottoms to their heart’s delight. Unlike Express, Armani is able to provide top and bottom configurations instead of shirt and tie matching. However, one thing that I wished Armani would have done is to put more of their modern button-down shirts in addition to their knit tops and tee shirts. I think that having more selection in their “dressing room” would give their site a more well-balanced appeal and value, especially if one is trying to coordinate a nice shirt-jeans casual attire.

Nevertheless, I think it’s still a great site that emphasizes quality modern attire, and a very helpful way to dress yourself online without having to try them on.

Express.com’s New Shopping Feature

7 08 2008

EXPRESS FASHION just recently launched a newer style guide for their men’s line of shirts and ties.  This style guide features a color coordination and mix-and-match structure of their shirts and ties, which is a good start for those that are not color- and fashion-inclined folks.

Express Men Shirt and Tie Fashion

While some may even question the quality of their shirts, I think this site is really good at actually making guys aware of the kinds of color schemes and patterns, and giving them more opportunities to identify what colors work well with each other, what colors don’t, and how accessories such as ties can influence the shirt’s appeal.

Kudos to you, Express!

Brand Value

6 08 2008

I had a conversation a couple of years ago with a former employer about brands and brand value.  Their position was that brand products are pretty much the same within their respective industry; essentially, the elements of that brand product remain consistent across the board, and the only thing that differentiates each brand is the label or name of the company that produces the product.  They used examples such as clothes and coffee, 2 of my favorite things to talk about, to illustrate their points.  “Coffee is coffee is coffee, derived from coffee beans,” they said.  “There is no difference between a pair of Wrangler Jeans and other jeans (designer or not), just the label,” they stated.  Hmmm.

Well I disagreed wholeheartedly to those points.  Coffee is not just coffee.  Each cup of coffee is different because of the type of bean used, how that bean was grown, and how it was roasted to make the taste different.  Similarly, clothing is different as different brands make/create their mark using various cuts, fabrics, styles, and other accessories to finish the final product.  And this is where brand value kicks in.

If I were to ask, “Is there a difference between Prada, Armani, Target, and Wal-Mart clothes?”, what would one say?  I would answer a resounding “YES!” to that question.  Designer brands normally use finer fabric materials, better stitching, and time-tested patterns to produce clothing than their non-designer brands.  They have more access to finer threads and use better tailoring techniques.

Armani Exchange Dress Shirt

Armani Exchange Dress Shirt

Here’s an example.  A great shirt will show its quality by how well that shirt is made, and this is usually defined by its 1) fabric, 2) cut, 3) tailoring, and 4) feel, among others.  Add elements of a) style, b) flair, and 3) color, one can then judge accurately whether or not that shirt will be a great fit for their body shape, skin tone, and overall appearance.  The ARMANI button-down dress shirt shown on the left is a good example of what quality shirts look like — based on the list I mentioned above — and it is even better to see in person when you can feel that quality.  Quality shirts will help you to not only look fashionable, but help polish your appearance and make you look desirable.  More importantly, quality shirts last longer than their cheaper counterparts, and are a long-term investment that serves as a foundation for your wardrobe for expansion.

Brands that I can attest to the value of their shirts — and actually own them — include Kenneth Cole, Armani Exchange, (some) Express, and Banana Republic.

While there are more brands that fit the type of quality shirts, there are some brands that do not make quality clothing.  I’m not going to name too many names, but brands sold at Wal-Mart, for example, do not fit those standards I mentioned above.  Like a lot of cheap brands, they hardly make you look flattering, have great quality fabric, or have exquisite tailoring of such fabric.  The cut of the clothing does not accentuate a person’s physique, and most of the time it distorts their image rather than emphasizes their positives.

Oh, and unless you’re a cowboy, work in farming or construction, or heavily involved in NASCAR, Wrangler jeans are not fashionable.   More on that argument in a separate blog.

To sum things up, there is worth and value in higher brands because they are more often able to accentuate the positives of your body and make you look AND feel good about yourself.  They follow the same high quality guidelines and rules in the clothing that they create, and in doing so, are able to provide a better long-lasting value and investment to your wardrobe.
